Medical Transportation Driver

Do you enjoy driving and want to make a meaningful difference in someone's life? Our Medical Transportation Program provides essential rides to older adults on Camano Island who need to get to medical appointments but have no other reliable means of transportation.

Impact on the Community

  • Volunteers often report how rewarding it is to help someone maintain their independence by ensuring they can access essential healthcare services.
  • Many passengers may feel isolated, and your conversation and company during the ride are often as meaningful as the transportation itself.

What You'll Do

  • Drive older adults to and from necessary medical appointments such as doctor visits, physical therapy, or specialist consultations.
  • Offer a kind and supportive presence for those who need assistance getting to their appointments.
  • Engage in meaningful conversations and build connections with people who appreciate your time and help.

Schedule Flexibility

  • Volunteers have full control over which rides they accept. Choose based on your preferred driving distance, day, and time.
  • Whether you can volunteer once a week or a few times a month, your contribution makes a huge difference.

Requirements

  • A working vehicle and a valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Proof of current auto insurance.
  • A Washington State Patrol background check. We will facilitate the background check.
  • A caring attitude and compassion for older adults who need assistance.
  • Basic awareness of the importance of punctuality and ensuring safe transportation for passengers.

Mileage Reimbursement

  • To help cover the cost of driving, we offer mileage reimbursement for each ride you complete.

What You Can Expect

  • Many rides are local, though distances vary based on medical needs.
  • You will be helping someone in need get to essential appointments they may have missed.
  • It is a direct way to give back to the community and make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
  • The opportunity to meet incredible people and hear their stories during your time together.
  • Build meaningful connections with the people you serve.

Training and Orientation

We provide a brief orientation to familiarize you with the program, explain how ride coordination works, and go over any questions you might have about the process.  We will also share tips for safely transporting older adults and ensure you are comfortable with the responsibilities.

Coordination Support

  • Our staff coordinates the rides and matches volunteers with requests based on your availability, preferred driving distance, and schedule. You will never be assigned a ride without your prior agreement.
  • You will have contact information for both the staff coordinator and the passenger, making communication easy in case of any changes or issues.

How To Get Involved

Ready to make a difference? Fill out our online application. We'll provide you with all the details on how to get started, and you can soon begin accepting rides that fit your schedule.

Being a medical driver for the Camano Center has been a positive influence in my life. It’s provided social contact for me and a much-needed service for our clients. It can be very hard to find rides in our area and clients are grateful that they don’t always have to rely on family or friends for help. Clients frequently comment that it helps them maintain their independence.
